摘要
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent degenerative dementia in most regions of the world, including Europe and Bulgaria. Accounting for the global trends for increased life expectancy and aging of the population, and for enhancement of diagnostic criteria and methods, an increase of prevalence is expected in the forthcoming years. Diagnosing the disease in the stage of advanced dementia does not pose major difficulties, but it is hard in the early stages when treatment is most efficient. Positron emission tomography with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose is a well established method evaluating local tissue metabolic activity for early diagnosis of AD. In this paper we discuss the application of the method in Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment. We present cases of both disorders, which were assessed by FDG-PET for the first time in Bulgaria.
