ON THE SHAPE OF MONATOMIC STEPS OF COPPER SURFACE IN STM IMAGES

A clean vicinal surface of copper with (111) terraces has been studied by STM in ultra-high vacuum. From the evolution of the step-edge structure shown in a sequence of images, evidence for a tip-surface interaction was observed. The monatomic steps exhibit a comb-like structure with teeth parallel to the scanning direction. The origin of this fringed appearance is discussed.
