Giant cell reparative granuloma of mandibular condyle - A case report

The occurrence of Giant cell reparative granuloma in the mandibular condyle is extremely rare. Till now, only 6 cases have been reported. The term reparative giant cell granuloma at one time was widely accepted. The use of the term reparative has subsequently been discontinued since the lesion represents essentially a destructive process. We report a case of a 22 year old male with giant cell reparative granuloma in the mandibular condyle. He had a painful swelling over the right condylar region for 4 months, rapidly increasing in size and his jaw movements were restricted. CT scan demonstrated destruction of the condylar and sub condylar region by the aggressive lesion with no involvement of the surrounding soft tissues. The lesion was surgically resected. Frozen section reported the presence of giant cells and clear margins. Histopathology showed non uniformly distributed giant cells in a fibrotic stroma confirming the diagnosis of giant cell reparative granuloma. He has been on follow up since one year with no signs of recurrence.
