THE OXIDATION-STATE AND COORDINATION ENVIRONMENT OF CHROMIUM IN A SEALED ANODIC ALUMINUM-OXIDE FILM BY X-RAY ABSORPTION-SPECTROSCOPY

Chromium K-edge XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) and EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) data were obtained for a thick, porous aluminum oxide film sealed in dichromate solution. Analysis of the XANES data indicates that the film contains Cr6+ ions in tetrahedral ligand fields of oxygen atoms, consistent with the presence of a chromate-like anion, [CrO4]2-. Analysis of the EXAFS data provides an average Cr-O interatomic distance and Debye-Waller factor of 0.165 and 0.0053 nm, respectively, which are in good agreement with those for the chromate anion in Na2CrO4.4H2O. These results, in combination with the previous ones of Hawkins et al. [Corros. Sci. 27, 391 (1987]), suggest that the reduction of adsorbed Cr6+ to Cr3+ is dependent upon the thickness of the alumina film.
