摘要
We developed a scheme for transverse compression of atomic beams, based on the two-dimensional version of the magneto-optical trap. The feasibility of the scheme even for a multilevel atom could be demonstrated by enhancing the brightness of a monoenergetic slow sodium atomic beam by more than three orders of magnitude. The atomic beam is compressed from an initial diameter of about 3 mm down to a minimum diameter of 43 μm, resulting in a density of more than 109 cold atoms/cm3. The dependence of the final beam size on the various experimental parameters is investigated. © 1990.
