Ask a mechanical engineer where optics are to be found in production, and the most likely answer will be 'In the standards room' or 'In quality control'. One view is that inspection decreases productivity by rejecting a proportion of production. Don Braggins looks at examples of optically-based technologies which contribute to raising productivity.
