DISPERSION AND CONSOLIDATION OF ULTRAFINE BATIO3 POWDER IN NONAQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

Dispersion characteristics of nanometer-sized BaTiO3 powder in thirty-one kinds of non-aqueous solutions were evaluated by measuring the heights of cloudy layers in suspensions as a function of settling time. High dispersion state was maintained longer (100 to 500 h) in alcohols and cyclohexanone. The rheological behavior of alcohol and cyclohexanone BaTiO3, suspensions was analyzed by the power law equation S=kgamma(n), where S is the shear stress, K the consistency index, gamma the shear rate and n is a constant. The green densities (34-54% of TD) of consolidated powder compacts were greatly influenced by the critical solid contents of colloidal solids at n=0 which were estimated to be 17-42 vol%. The BaTiO3 powder compacts with green densities above 57% TD, isostatically compressed after filtration, were densified to 94-96% TD after sintering at 1200-degrees-C for 2 h.
