Electron microscopy of a series of experimentally detached and surgically reattached retinas in the owl monkey (Aotus trivirgatus) revealed that the fine-structural changes in the retina and pigment epithelium of retinal detachment were reversed by reattachment. The photoreceptor outer segments tended to return to their normal morphology, lamellar inclusion bodies reappeared in the pigment epithelium, melanin granules returned to the pigment epithelial apical processes, and the cystoid retinal spaces disappeared. © 1969.
