Hydrodynamic aspects of the corrosion-erosion of tube inlets in the inlet channel of a typical shell and tube heat exchanger handling solutions with some solid content were investigated. A cross flow pattern near the tube inlets was identified by flow visualization. This is considered to be the main factor contributing to the corrosion-erosion of tube inlets. A computer model simulating the cross flow and tracing the trajectories of particles in the flow was developed to help identify the range of particle sizes likely to result in tube inlet corrosion-erosion. © 1979.
