The American Civil War had serious international repercussions, particularly in Great Britain, AL though the British Government hoped to remain neutral, the Trent affair in 1861 and discussions by Cabinet members to offer mediation in 1862 threatened to bring Britain into the conflict Caution and forbearance on both sides prevented events from slipping out of control, hut the circumstances were threatening.
