CLINICAL STUDIES WITH MITHRAMYCIN

Forty-six patients with a variety of tumors were treated with mithramycin in dosages ranging from 25 y/kg/day x 5 to 90 y/kg/day X 5. Of two patients with embryonal cell carcinoma of the testes, one had a complete remission for nine years and the other had greater than a 50% regression for three months. The other 13 patients with testicular tumors failed and there was no other response of up to 50% regression in the rest of the series. Moderate to severe toxicity appeared at all dosage levels with hemorrhagic manifestations the most ominous. Four deaths from drug toxicity occurred. In several important publications on this drug, reports of toxic deaths were usually veiled, which is unfortunate, as its use is too often associated with an unpredictable toxic death. © 1969 S.
