DACRON MESH-BASED IMPLANTS FOR ORBITAL FLOOR RECONSTRUCTION

My experience in the surgical treatment of more than 150 cases of orbital floor fractures has indicated that thicker implants of 2.0 and 3.0 mm: 1. 1. Are always required in late cases of established global ptosis and enophthalmos (4.0-mm and 5.0-mm thick implants are occasionally needed). 2. 2. Are often needed to prevent global ptosis and enophthalmos in early cases of large hole fractures of the floor. Fifty-four orbital floor fractures have been reconstructed with alloplast implants based with Dacron mesh. No etxrusions or infections have occurred. The bonding of the 0.9-mm thick layer of Supramyd to the Silastic increased the rigidity and sag resistance of the implant over large floor holes while preserving the Silastic implant's qualities of easy cuttability and globe-protecting softness. Small and intermediate-size floor holes may be effectively covered with pure Silastic implants based with Dacron mesh. © 1969.
