MECHANICAL-PROPERTIES OF BETA-SIC PRESSURELESS SINTERED WITH AL2O3 ADDITIONS

摘要
Mechanical properties of pressureless sintered SiC with Al2O3 addition were measured. The increase in fracture toughness and strength is attributed to the presence of a liquid phase which results in the formation of platelets of an alpha-SiC. The highest values for flexural strength and toughness were measured on samples with approximately 10 wt% Al2O3 addition. Pull out, crack bridging and crack deflection are identified as the major strengthening and toughening mechanisms.
