An Endobronchial Hamartoma Case Treated by Bronchoscopy

A sixty-one-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with left sided chest pain, fever and chills. Chest X-ray showed opacity on left middle and lower zone abutting the left hemidiaphragm and left cardiac border. Body temperature was 38(circle)C, physical examination of the chest revealed dullness and decreased breath sounds on left lower zone. Computed tomography of the thorax showed pleural effusion and associated atelectasis on left lung. Pleural effusion was an exudate. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy demonstrated a polypoid mass lesion totally obstructing the anteromedial segment of the left lower lobe. Pathologic diagnosis was hamartoma. It was removed with cryotherapy. Computed tomography of the thorax was normal after treatment. In conclusion, endobronchial hamartomas can cause pneumonia and atelectasis. Bronchoscopic treatment modalities can successfully be applied to these lesions.
