A continuous silicon carbide (SiC) fibre-reinforced titanium (Ti-15V-3Cr-3Sn-3A1) composite was metallographically examined. Several methods for examining composite materials were investigated and documented. Polishing techniques for this material are described. An interference layering method was developed to reveal the structure of the fibre, the reaction zone, and various phases within the matrix. Microprobe and transmission electron microscope analyses were performed on the fibre-matrix interface. A detailed description of the fibre distribution as well as the microstructure of the fibre and matrix are presented. © 1990.
