SPINODAL DECOMPOSITION IN 2-COMPONENT SMECTICS

摘要
A two-component smectic undergoing a demixing transition to two coexisting smectic phases exhibits a novel spinodal pattern as observed by light scattering and optical microscopy. We show that this spinodal, characterized by a prescribed angle between the most intense wavevectors and the layer normal, is the result of the instability of the baroclinic mode of two-component smectic hydrodynamics.
