ELECTRODE SURFACE EFFECTS IN THE HIGH-VOLTAGE GLOW-DISCHARGE

摘要
The production of focused electron beams using a high voltage glow discharge is described. It is shown that the beam stability is closely related to the cathode condition. The electron beam output is determined by secondary electron emission from the cathode surface and this can be controlled under certain conditions, by taking appropriate measures. Non self-sustained micro-arcing has also been observed and is consistent with the 'electro-forming' of conducting channels through surface oxides and their subsequent explosion by resistive heating. © 1978 Pergamon Press Ltd.
