Based on the rock characteristics of strain-softening and dilatancy, this paper developed a theoretical formula for calculating broken zone thickness of roadways, analyzed the influence of buried depth, rock strength, strain-softening extent, and support pressure on the surrounding rock stability of the deeply buried roadways. The new concept of ` three bolting' support is put forward, which refers to a supporting method combining bolt and shotcrete, grout, and anchorage cable. This new supporting method has been applied to engineering practice; and favorable technical and economic benefit is obtained.
