摘要
While most potentially hazardous industrial undertakings have safety objectives of some kind, the nuclear power industry is relatively unique in the extent to which it has attempted to refine and quantify its particular ones. This paper discusses the reasons for this and reviews the range and variety of nuclear safety objectives by reference to studies carried out within the European Community and the International Atomic Energy Agency. It refers to recent developments in the UK which illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of attempting to use quantitative safety objectives in the public arena and concludes with some thoughts about the likely future development of nuclear safety objectives.
