APPLICABILITY OF SOLAR IRRADIATION FOR PHOTOCHEMICAL WASTE-WATER TREATMENT

Solar applications in a number of advanced photochemical wastewater oxidation methods working with UV-A and/or visible light, especially the photo-Fenton reaction (Fe2+/H2O2/UV-A <580 nm), the system Fe3+/O-2/UV-A <580 nm, and Tio(2)/UV-A <390 nm have been investigated with 4-Chlorophenol (4-CP) as a model compound. Degradation results of 4-CP and of total organic carbon (TOC) in aqueous solution are discussed in detail. Pilot plant experiments with different wastewater (landfill leachate, plastics industry) using the Fe2+/H2O2/UV-A system in a novel photo-reactor prototype are reported. A new design for a reactor with immobilized TiO2 on fused-silica fibers is also presented. The quantum efficiency for 4-CP destruction obtained with this TiO2-reactor was four times higher compared to the slurry treatment.
