COULOMETRIC TITRATION OF OLEFINIC UNSATURATION IN FATTY-ACIDS WITH BROMINE IN PROPYLENE CARBONATE

摘要
The application of propylene carbonate and a 1:2 chloro-form-propylene carbonate mixture as solvents for coulometric bromination of olefinic unsaturation of fatty acids has been studied. A voltammetric investigation shows current-potential behavior attributable to both the Br3-/Br-and Br2/Br3- systems in these media. Ideal current efficiency for generation of Br2 and Br3- is demonstrated and a rapid procedure for the direct coulometric titration of several food oils using LiBr3 supporting electrolyte with potentiometric end-point detection is described. Titration results are comparable with those obtained by a less convenient standard volumetric procedure. © 1979, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
