RELATION BETWEEN THE ACTIVATION-ENERGY FOR SELF-DIFFUSION AND THE PARTIAL MOLAR ENERGY IN INTERSTITIAL SOLID-SOLUTIONS

Within the framework of the lattice gas as a model for the thermodynamic and transport properties in interstitial solid solutions, we point out an approximate relationship between the partial molar energy and the activation energy for solute diffusion. As an example of the relation, an application is made to austenite. It is found that the compositional dependence of the tracer carbon diffusion coefficient is reasonably well represented using the partial molar enthalpy of carbon as input to the equation for the tracer diffusion coefficient. © 1979.
