Calcium nitrite is promoted as a penetrating corrosion inhibitor for steel in concrete structures and transport characteristics of this inhibitor in concrete are crucial for its efficiency. The diffusion of nitrite ions was studied in noncarbonated and carbonated concrete of different w/c ratio. The diffusion coefficient D was determined upon the rate of passing of nitrite ions through the concrete membrane as well as upon the nitrite distribution in concrete membrane after completing the test. Larger values of D were observed for concrete samples with higher w/c ratio and after carbonation. Possible explanations of this latter effect are given.
