Biosphere reserves will play an increasingly key role in the conservation and utilization of the genetic resources of wild species because of their potential for monitoring and exchange of information and material. There are a number of ways that the development of the biosphere reserve system can enhance prospects for sustainable development and this involves divergent approaches to the documentation of wild species, ways to pay for conservation and to distribute profits from the marketing of biotechnology products, local involvement in land management, and identification of a range of options in land use planning.
