FABRICATION OF BAND MICROELECTRODE ARRAYS FROM METAL FOIL AND HEAT-SEALING FLUOROPOLYMER FILM

We describe a technique for easily preparing arrays of band microelectrodes by sealing metal foil and film of Tefzel fluoropolymer in “multidecker” sandwiches. Electrodes have been prepared from gold, platinum, nickel, and sliver foils with thicknesses ranging from 4 to 100 μm. Double-layer capacitance measurements suggest that the seal between the film and the metal is very good. Results of voltammetry experiments using arrays, single-band electrodes, and a conventional disk electrode are compared. Using anthraquinone-(0/-) in acetonitrile as a reversible couple, we demonstrate three diffusion regimes (linear diffusion to each element, hemicylindrical diffusion, and linear diffusion to the array) at a single array. Results are compared to theoretical descriptions. With the electrode arrays, relatively undistorted cyclic voltammograms can be recorded at scan rates up to 1000 V/s In aprotic solvents with no compensation or correction. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
