ANALYSIS OF THE TAXONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF OLIGOTROPHIC BACTERIA USING MEMBRANE-PROTEIN COMPONENTS

The distributions of the membrane-associated proteins of oligotrophic and eutrophic bacteria were studied. Oligotrophic bacteria were found to contain a greater number of intense protein bands in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis than eutrophic bacteria, which may reflect the greater variety of transport systems in oligotrophs. Plots of taxonomic affinity constructed using membrane protein components suggest that gel electrophoresis of membrane fractions can be successfully applied to some bacteria to determine their taxonomic status. Comparison of the dynamic characteristics of membranes and protein-free liposomes prepared from total lipids from the same membranes showed that membrane-associated proteins make a greater contribution to membrane viscosity in oligotrophic bacteria than in eutrophic bacteria.
