Patient Thoughts and Opinions Related to Psycho-Social Support of Family Members during Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in the Emergency Departments

Emergency Departments are one of the settings in hospitals where the most of the CPR take place. Would the patients whose emergency care includes CPR like their family member to be in the room during CPR to provide them with psychosocial support? Research questioned whether ER patients would/wouldn't want family members to be present in their room during CPR to give them emotional support and these patients' reasoning on subject. The research population was comprised of patients who came to a public hospital's emergency departments. The data were obtained with an 11 item Personal Characteristics Form and six item determination of Opinions about CPR using a face to face interview method. In research %62.3 of the patients stated that they would want relative with they if CPR was necessary %58.9 thought that their relative would be able to give them moral and emotional support. The majority of those who wouldn't want a relative with them during this process gave the reason as their relatives would be sad, not be able to endure it or that it would be an unforgettable bad experience. It's found out patient's opinions on the subject are affected by characteristics of their personalities, previous experiences with CPR. It's advised more researches similar to this study should be done in different locations to examine patient's thoughts and opinions on whether they would/wouldn't like family members' presence in their room during CPR. It's also highly recommended health care providers pay immediate attention to subject throughout our country.
