Several of the shamans living in Laguna Escalante village were interviewed during an ethnographic fieldwork performed in 1989 in the framework of a study on Nivakle religion in general and shamanism in particular. Life stories and the causes of their vocation were recorded. - This paper sketches the figure of the shaman, the idea of sicee - a central element of Nivakle religiosity - and the soul representations of this people. The initiation of the shamans who were interviewed is described as they rendered it themselves. Finally, some general considerations are made concerning the reasons of the election and the several ways of being consecrated shaman.
