Canon law may offer some promising insights to the bishops assembled for the Synod on young people, faith and vocational discernment. This paper provides an historical overview of the role that the criteria of suitability ought to play in the discernment of priestly vocations, as well as the importance of the distinction between the external and the internal forum on the path to priesthood.
