ENTHALPY MEASUREMENTS ON SOLID AND LIQUID VANADIUM BY LEVITATION CALORIMETRY

Enthalpy measurements of solid and liquid vanadium were performed in the temperature range between 1809 and 2632 K by levitation calorimetry. The enthalpies of vanadium may be expressed by the following polynomials: for solid: solid: DELTA-H(T) - DELTA-H(298) = -8217 + 24.943 T + 1.8252 x 10(-3)T2 + 2.5715 x 10(-10)T4 + 1.8485 x 10(5)T-1(Jmol-1) for liquid: DELTA-H(T) - DELTA-H(298) = 84723+/-126 + (46.72+/-0.58) [T-T(s-l)](Jmol-1). From these results the heat and entropy of fusion can be obtained: DELTA-H(s-l) = 23036+/-163 (Jmol-1); DELTA-S(s-l) = 10.46 +/- 0.07 (Jmol-1 K-1). The own experimental results are critically compared with those of previous works reported in the literature.
