TRACKING JUVENILE COD (GADUS-MORHUA L) IN NORTHERN NORWAY USING ACOUSTIC TAGS

Juvenile cod (Gadus morhua L.) were caught as 0-group larvae in July 1992 and held in captivity in a sea cage in a fjord in Finnmark county. In July 1993 five 1-year-old individuals (21-27 cm) were tagged externally with a small ultrasonic transmitter and released into the fjord. The movements of the cod were followed for 4-93 h. The juveniles inhabited the shore slope at a depth between 10 and 30 m, and did not enter deeper parts of the fjord. No consistent pattern of movement was observed. Cruising speeds of 0.2-0.3 body-length s(-1) were recorded. The maximum recorded distance from the release site was 2350 m. The juveniles were identified from the number of vertebrae, as Arcto-Norwegian cod. Results are discussed in relation to recruitment of cod to the fjords in northern Norway.
