Solid-state **1**3C nuclear magnetic resonance (nmr) was used to study the two different conformers of trans natural rubber (NR). The alpha and beta conformers of trans NR were observed to give different **1**3C chemical shifts. The relative magnitude and direction of the chemical shift for the methyl carbon on the beta conformer are predicted by a steric perturbation model. The alpha conformer gave longer relaxation times than the beta conformer. For this highly mobile semicrystalline polymer, spin diffusion was not a major contributer to the relaxation process.
