RELATION OF VARIOUS FORMS OF ANEMIA TO PLACENTAL WEIGHT

In 196 patients with thalassemia minor and 294 with other forms of anemia, the incidence of placentas weighing more than 900 grams was 2 per cent. In diabetes mellitus and erythroblastosis, approximately 10 per cent of placentas weighed over 900 grams but anemia was the commonest condition associated with abnormally large placentas. In thalassemia, the incidence of placental weight of 300 grams or less was also increased as in diabetes and erythroblastosis, which suggests a common predisposition to placental insufficiency. © 1968.
