Antifouling paints containing tributyltin (TBT) compounds have been in limited use on netting cages at Scottish marine salmon cultivation units. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) have been shown experimentally to accumulate increased levels of tin in various organs from exposure to low concentrations (0.1-1.0 μg l-1) of tributyltin in solution. Cultivated salmon of commercial size from farms using TBT-treated nets normally contain around 0.5-1.0 mg kg-1 TBT in muscle tissue. © 1987.
