MECHANISM FOR NICKEL-MOLYBDENUM ALLOY ELECTRODEPOSITION FROM AMMONIACAL CITRATE ELECTROLYTES

摘要
The electrodeposition of Ni-Mo alloys from ammoniacal citrate solutions was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and ESCA. X-ray diffraction analysis of electrodeposited Ni-Mo alloys, heated at 600-degrees-C under 10(-4) Pa, indicated the existence of MoO2. Deposit from the electrolyte containing molybdate only showed diffraction pattern corresponding to MoO2 and was identified as tetravalent molybdenum species by ESCA. Probably, an intermediate product, MoO2 was reduced by hydrogen bonded with d-band vacancy of nickel. If the electrodeposition proceeded on this reduction step, maximum molybdenum content should be 13 at% which was calculated from d-band vacancy of Ni. However, maximum molybdenum content was experimentally found to be about 21 at%. The departure from calculated maximum value suggested that electrodeposited alloy also possibly possessed the d-band vacancy and further reduction of MoO2 proceeded by atomic hydrogen bonded with d-band vacancy of alloy. The alloy would lost all d-band vacancy when the alloy composition attained to maximum molybdenum content.
