The data evaluated by the SCF/EC for the determination of vitamin requirements are basically the same as those evaluated by other expert groups in member- and non-member countries. The SCF did not try, however, to harmonize existing national recommendations on nutrient intakes at the EC level. ''It sought instead to consider the data afresh, including the most recent, and sometimes still unpublished, work.'' The nutrient requirements committee of the DGE frequently arrives from different viewpoints at different values for the recommended vitamin intakes. This raises problems for some consumer groups, food manufactures and those concerned with food trade regulations. Deviations from the Reference Nutrient Intakes proposed by the SCF are substantiated and explained in detail in the light of nutritional physiology and policy and supported by references to literature, to other national expert groups and international agencies and the results of the National Consumption Study (NVS) and the Nutrition Survey and Risk Factors Analysis Study (VERA). The Nutritional Requirements Committee of the DGE suggests revising the recommended nutrient intakes proposed by the SCF/EC.
