摘要
A small magnetic hard disk drive has been developed by IBM. Although its initial project goal was as a vehicle for exploring the application of micromechanical fabrication and integration to hard disk drives, it has evolved into a potential storage device for hand-held or portable data applications. This design is consistent with the recently established Compact Flash CF Type II form factor, (42.8 x 36.4 x 5 mm.) A discussion is given regarding the choice and design of the mechanical elements of the drive, and, in some cases, a comparison is made of the suitability of a micromechanical version of the given element with a conventional, but miniaturized version. The general characteristics of the drive are discussed, along with the nature of the host/device environments and applications for which this microdrive may be appropriate.
