The acute systemic effects of IGF-I on bone protein metabolism from hormonally intact rats have been investigated by measuring the fractional rate of protein synthesis. The animals received a single subcutaneous injection of rhIGF-I (100 mu g). Treatment with IGF-I increased the rate of tibia protein synthesis (Ks) while plasma glucose and insulin concentrations were decreased. These results art in favor of an endocrine role of IGF in stimulating bone growth.
