Precocene II induced similar "juvenilizing" effects, when applied topically on the last instar larvae and freshly moulted pupae of the mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, to those of hydroprene. Doses of 10-mu-g and 50-mu-g per specimen can induce similar effects as those of about one order lower doses of hydroprene. The degree of morphogenetic malformation in the recipient insects are correlated with the sterilizing effects. Both juvenoid and precocene II caused the destruction of follicular cells, degeneration of oocytes and malformation of ovarioles. A possible mode of action of both tested compounds is discussed.
