SPRING AND AUTUMN SPAWNERS OF HERRING (CLUPEA-HARENGUS) IN THE NORTH-SEA, SKAGERRAK AND KATTEGAT, POPULATION GENETIC-ANALYSIS

Restriction endonuclease analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was used to investigate the genetic relationships among samples of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) from pre-determined spawning locations in the Kattegat/Skagerrak area and in the North Sea. The 12 restriction enzymes used in the analysis identified 64 different mtDNA clones among 193 individuals. One clone was present in all areas and it was also the dominating clone in the total material. The study provides no evidence of genetic differentiation among Atlantic herring sampled from different spawning locations both in spring and autumn. © 1990.
