Graduate education in optical-fiber communication technology in China is described. A detailed account of the experience accumulated by Shanghai Jiao Tong University is provided as a typical example. There are three areas of graduate programs in this university: guided-wave fiber optics, optical-fiber transmission systems, and optical-fiber local area networks (LAN). The textbooks used in one of the courses conducted by the author are examined. The subjects of some of the M.S. and Ph.D. dissertations are listed. Graduate students who have received degrees are encouraged to submit papers to Chinese and foreign technical journals for publication. Some high-grade M.S. students are sent abroad to pursue a Ph.D. For students who obtain a Ph.D., it is common to arrange to do postdoctoral research of one to two years in well-known foreign universities. Appendices listing Chinese universities which offer such graduate education is included, along with a list of language reference books used in China.
