NEUTRON DIFFUSE-SCATTERING STUDIES OF THE MAGNETIC-MOMENT DEFECT AND ATOMIC SHORT-RANGE ORDERING IN FE3-XVXSI ALLOYS

Neutron diffuse scattering and saturation magnetization experiments have been made on single crystals samples of Fe3-xVxSi with x = 0.15 at room temperature. Much weaker atomic clustering of V atoms on the B sublattice has been observed compared to Fe3-xMnxSi alloys. A previously developed model of magnetic moment defect in the vicinity of an impurity atom in Fe3Si has been fitted to the experimental magnetic diffuse cross-sections. Results obtained lead to the conclusion that the vanadium atom might carry a small magnetic moment of about 0.4-mu(B).
