SHORT-RANGE ORDER IN ANNEALED GD-CO FILMS WITH PERPENDICULAR ANISOTROPY

Amorphous Gd-Co films prepared by sputtering at low dc bias fields show perpendicular magnetic anisotropy after they have been annealed in a vacuum of 10-6 mbar. Anisotropy is not induced in the films if they are annealed at 10-3 mbar. Determination of the radial distribution function of the atoms before annealing and after various annealing steps showed that heat-treatment activates oxygen diffusion into the film. The oxygen bonds preferentially to Gd atoms and does not react with Co atoms. The former model of annealing-induced perpendicular anisotropy in RE-TM amorphous films is supported by the results of the present investigation. © 1979.
