Mode of formation and structure of complexes between cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic dyes are reviewed on the basis of the relevant literature, accentuating the various ways of binding the dye onto the polymer. After some remarks on the experimental techniques employed, a systematic survey is presented according to classes of polymers, centering on synthetic polymers with cationic sites and regarding the anionic dyes on methyl orange and its homologues.
