摘要：
The article is dedicated to an obscure page of A. J. Toynbee's biography - his journey from China to Europe via the territory of the Soviet Union in 1930. This trip immediately preceded the beginning of A Study of History; and impressions of the journey had exerted a significant influence on the conceptual framework for his opus magnum. Intellectual background of this event is reconstructed from Toynbee's works and through the documents from the archives of the Bodleian Library and the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
