Chromium salts of synthetic fatty acids (SFA) are added to fuel to increase its electrical conductivity and to prevent the buildup of static charge when the fuel is pumped through lines. For an understanding of the mechanism through which such compounds exert an antistatic action, and for the synthesis of the most effective additives of this type, it is important to establish the actual structure of these salts. In this connection, the authors have investigated the compositions of three samples of chromium salts of SEA from pilot plant production. The commercial product is a solution of the SFA chromium salts in toluene. The molecular weight of the recovered salts was determined by means of an ST-68 ebulliograph, the elemental composition of the organic part by means of a semiautomatic C, H//2 N-analyzer. These results are listed. IR spectroscopic studies were performed on the SFA chromium salts in crystalline form and in CCL//4 solutions.
