Phytotoxicity of Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Salvia officinalis L. to Control the Noxious Weed, Panicum turgidum Forssk

PETRI-DISH experiments were applied to investigate the potential allelopathic effects of cold and hot aqueous extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis and Salvia officinalis on germination percentage, relative germination percentage, and inhibition percentage as well as plumule and radicle lengths of Panicum turgidum. The results indicate that the degree of inhibition on seed germination and growth of the recipient species was largely dependent on the concentration of the extracts of both donor species. The effect was statistically significant at p <= 0.05 for most treatments. The present study recommends the use of the two donor species for the biocontrol of weeds like Panicum turgidum.
