COBOL has been resurrected in the form of Object-Oriented (OO) COBOL, if it has been killed at all. COBOL programs essentially run crucial applications such as payroll and general ledger postings. For this reason, the programming language has persisted. However, current trends are geared towards object orientation. ANSI has responded by compiling the specifications for OO COBOL. Although it is still in drafts, OO COBOL is eagerly awaited and fully anticipated to be at par with current programming languages.
