NEARLY 30 years ago, Dean Willard Sperry of the Harvard Divinity School published a small book entitled The Ethical Basis of Medical Practice. It turned out to be a landmark of sorts, and the reason is contained in an offhand comment that appears half-way through the volume. Speaking of the AMA's code of ethics, a 22-page printed document, Dean Sperry said that “…the patient's stake in the matter is not always as clearly envisaged as it might be.”1 Dean Sperry's comment was a polite understatement.
