A mathematical analysis is presented for evaluating the optimum thickness of insulation required at the bottom of a conventional basin-type solar still corresponding to the minimum cost of distillate yield. The usefulness of analysis is illustrated by evaluating optimum thickness of insulation for the four typical climates of India viz. New Delhi, Bangalore, Jodhpur and Srinagar. © 1990.
